Every year around this time (Memorial Day), hundreds of thousands of beach goers from across the US, and maybe even the world, travel to that one place that seems to attract every type of party goer. No we’re not speaking of Las Vegas, or Los Angeles, or even New York City. We are talking about Miami Beach, FL aka South Beach.

Urban Beach week, which brings Miami Beach a lucrative amount of funds, has been evolving into a more “chaperoned” event. We do understand that there is no official permit for the event, but it is a tradition that was started years ago by college students, and a few celebrities.

Compared to years ago, where Miami Beach was free for the roaming by Urban Beach week participants, it seems as if officials of Miami Beach are detouring participants from “trying to have a great time” to “keeping one eye open at every waking moment (paranoia)”.

When arriving on South Beach (beside heavy traffic), participants will find barricaded streets, DUI check-points, police officers on bikes, ATVs, and even horses. Not even open containers are allowed during this weekend event. You see a few years back, a lot of things did occur which may have prompted the officials of Miami Beach to make a few security changes, but in honestly, those occurrences that occurred, were mostly provoked by (what we (Miamians) call tourist) “out of towner’s”.

Many of these “out of towner’s” arrive here (Miami Beach) thinking South Beach is under Martial Law . With no care in the world, they run wild, causing havoc, thinking that their just having a good time, while in actuality, their ruining the Urban Beach experience for many others who are planning to attend the event for the first time in the near future.

All we are saying (being locals), we are not criticizing the officials of Miami Beach for the beefed up security (we actually appreciate it), and we are not bashing the “out of Towner’s” who gracefully spend (for some) their life savings just to attend this week’s yearly event. We’re just saying that every year security on South Beach gets stricter and stricter and this is mostly because of the attitude and behavior of many of the Urban Beach week participants. If these attitudes/behaviors don’t change, soon Urban Beach week will be “free pass to jail week”.

In it all, we can say this, that out of all the participants attending Urban Beach week, at least 96% of them our only here for a good time and have no intentions of making it a bad one. For those of you who do have bad intentions (especially you out of towner’s), remember your just visitors to this beautiful city of ours. Following rules is something that should have been taught as a child. There are ways you can still enjoy yourself and not break any rules/laws. Also, respect is given when respect is received. Respect our city and lets all have a great time.
